Steve Canyon Volume 19 HC / 40th Aniversary
signed by Milton Caniff
When Kitchen Sink Press' long-running Steve
Canyon series hit the 40th anniversary point in 1987 (the
strip began in 1947) it was decided that a special hard cover
book version of the anniversary issue (No. 19 in the series)
would be printed to honor the event.
An edition of 900 copies with an oversize
illustrated tip-in plate signed
by Milton Caniff, who
very rarely did book signings, sold out immediately in 1987.
What we are offering here is something even scarcer: a small
number of Artist's proofs of the same signed hardcover.
Only 50 of these were produced, divided between Milton
Caniff and his publisher.
The different end papers (a nice detail)
show Caniff at work in 1951 and doing a chalk talk with
cartoonist Charles Schulz in the 70s, both reproduced
in choice sepia duotone. The front cover of this edition shows
the never-before-published self-portrait Time commissioned
from Caniff that they rejected(!) while the back cover
shows the acutal Time Magazine cover -- an interesting comparison.
The contents feature a lengthy retrospective
"Sidebar" article by Caniff, several pages of
promotional art for Canyon, and the complete dailies and Sundays
from 5/15/57 to 12/31/57. 8.75" x 11.25", Edited and
designed by Peter Poplaski. 144 pages. Hard cover book,
NM.

The back cover BELOW reprints the January
13, 1947 cover of Time magazine with a portrait of Caniff,
Steve Canyon and villain Copper Calhoun by illustrator
Boris Chaliapin.
